Each month, the Veterans Administration sends groups of wounded Veterans from the West Los Angeles VA to participate in our sailing program. For some, this is the first opportunity to experience sailing and being out on the ocean.
We have also done sailing programs with the Long Beach VA for their blind veterans
When Emerald was sea worthy, local children’s organizations including the Girl Scouts Sea Scouts local troop, sent groups of disadvantaged youth to participate in a sailing day or harbor tour. Spending time on a boat and learning about the various careers in the maritime world, and learning about marine life, provides insight into a whole new world of opportunity and experiences.
LA County local seniors enjoyed monthly harbor tours on the historic 1924 Emerald as well when we had Emerald sea worthy.
Challenges Foundation would like to continues to serve and develop programs for our community youth, senior citizens, disabled individuals and other people who may not have opportunities to participate in sailing, to experience the unique ocean environment, to feel the power of being under sail on a majestic boat like Emerald.
